Deborah Shapiro and Rolf Bjelke are among that very small group of the world's greatest adventurers. With meticulous planning and preparation the two set out in a 40 foot steel ketch, following prevailing winds and currents, to sail to the polar north, then North America, African coast, back to Brazil and Argentina and then South to spend 18 months wintering in Antarctica, their sailboat Deborah Shapiro och Rolf Bjelke har seglat många hundratusen sjömil sedan sjuttiotalet och är sveriges mest kända seglingspar inom båtvärlden.

Their goal (reminiscent of the Age of Exploration): to captain a 40-foot sailboat, the Northern Light, from Sweden to the Antarctic Peninsula and back, and overwinter in one of the earth's most beautiful yet inhospitable places. During the 28,000-nautical-mile trip, they endured battering seas, treacherous ice flows, and complete isolation while frozen at the bottom of the world. Their pleasure turns to dismay, however, when they become witnesses to the profound affects brought to the region by climate change. In 1990, Deborah Shapiro and Rolf Bjelke took "Northern Light" to the Antarctic and deliberately froze her into the ice for the southern winter. Their Monitor got them there and back safely.
