The lack of relatively light-weight plagioclase is the reason why it is so dense compared to its protoliths. Eclogite is a rare and important rock because it is formed only by conditions typically found in the mantle or the lowermost part of thickened crust.. Eclogites are helpful in elucidating patterns and processes of plate tectonics because many represent the crustal rocks that were subducted to depths in excess of 35 km and then returned to the surface. The eclogite unit occurs in the LHS below the MCT, and the protolith is considered to be 110–88-Ma-old (cretaceous volcanics in the LHS). The peak metamorphic condition was estimated as P > 15 kb (probably up to 20 kb) for a minimum temperature of 580°C (Groppo et al., 2007). Despite initially the eclogite facies was initially recognized in rocks only of basaltic composition, it is now known that protoliths other than basalt also can be metamorphosed to pressures and temperatures characteristic of the eclogite facies, and a wide variety of mineral assemblages can be stable at these conditions, including several hydrous mineral phases.

The red is pyrope or almandine garnet. The green is omphacite pyroxene. Eclogite appears to be moderately common in portions of the upper mantle, but it occurs in very few places at the Earth's surface. Contrary to this, we demonstrate that the Gubaoquan eclogite protolith was a Neoproterozoic basic dyke/sill which intruded into Proterozoic continental rocks. The SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating of the metamorphic rims of the Gubaoquan eclogite yields an age 466 ± 27 Ma. Subdued heavy rare earth element abundances and On the contrary, both the Jericho DIs and host eclogite garnets have small negative Eu and Sr anomalies, fractionated HREE patterns ((Lu N /Gd N)~3-5) and pristine mantle-like δ 18 O values of 5.2-6.0‰, indicating that shallow, plagioclase-rich oceanic crust protoliths are unlikely. The eclogitic DI trace-element characteristics require that both garnet and plagioclase were present in the protolith, which … Eclogite (Muenchberg Gneiss Massif; Early Ordovician protolith, about 480 Ma; Late Devonian metamorphism, about 365 Ma; Wissenstein, just south of Stammbach, Frankenwald Forest, Bavaria, southeast-central Germany) 1 (15097930745).jpg 734 × 837; 855 KB. In steady-state subduction zones with high rates of shear heating, the upper parts of the subducting oceanic crust progress through the greenschist → amphibolite → granulite → eclogite facies, whereas lower parts of the subducting oceanic crust progress through the blueschist → eclogite facies. 2004-10-02 2020-11-16 eclogite protolith and the hostJericho kimberlite, both the secondary isochron age and the c.2·2 Ga Stacey^Kramers model age are con-sistent with Paleoproterozoic protolith oceanic crust formation.

The whole-rock trace element composition is consistent with a pyroxenitic protolith. Eclogites that contain coesite, kyanite and corundum (coe-ky-cor) are  under eclogite-facies metamorphism and thereafter variably affected by retrograde processes. Eclogites in which represent relics of the eclogite protolith.

The blueschists show more variation in protoliths, which include N‐MORB, Oceanic Island Basalt (OIB) and Island Arc Basalt (IAB). 2003-04-01 On the contrary, both the Jericho DIs and host eclogite garnets have small negative Eu and Sr anomalies, fractionated HREE patterns ((Lu N /Gd N)~3-5) and pristine mantle-like δ 18 O values of 5.2-6.0‰, indicating that shallow, plagioclase-rich oceanic crust protoliths are unlikely. The eclogitic DI trace-element characteristics require that both garnet and plagioclase were present in the protolith, which … The metamorphic evolution and dehydration of subducting oceanic crust may be predicted by combining calculated pressure-temperature (P-T) paths with a model of metabasalt phase equilibria. In steady-state subduction zones with high rates of shear heating, the upper parts of the subducting oceanic crust progress through the greenschist → amphibolite → granulite → eclogite facies, whereas observed here, ma y also indicate eclogite protolith.

For many subduction zones, the most important dehydration reactions in the subducting oceanic crust occur at the blueschist → eclogite facies transition associated with the breakdown of lawsonite (or clinozoisite), glaucophane, and Protolith of the Stak eclogite in the northwestern Himalaya Yui Kouketsu (*) , Kéiko Hattori (**) & Stéphane Guillot (***) (*) Geochemical Research Center, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo 113-0033, Japan. Population A eclogites exhibit a more restricted range of δ 18 O values with a mean of 7.2 ± 0.1 per mil compared to population B eclogites where δ 18 O values with a mean of 5.2 ± 0.3 per mil are measured.

We present textural and chemical characterizations of suites of If one adopts MORB as the protolith of eclogite it will be particularly dense because of its high SiO 2 (stishovite) content compared to other mafic protoliths, such as cumulates, restites, delaminated continental crust and the average composition of oceanic crust. Major element contents of the eclogite cores are broadly similar to basalts with the exception of the high Na contents, presumably reflecting a seawater-altered oceanic crust protolith (Fig. 2).

The eclogite in the Flem Gabbro from Flemsøya in the Western Gneiss Region (WGR), Norway, is exceptional due to its peculiar mineral assemblage of olivine and orthopyroxene, which were inherited from an olivine gabbro protolith [8,33].
